There are many reasons why you should never sleep with makeup on, but some can be downright shocking.
Imagine this: you finally get home after a long night out with your friends. At long last you can take your cramped feet out of those heels, and change out of those jeans that were just a bit too tight! Now all that is left is to slowly…drift…to…sleep…
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS SITUATION?? You have just violated the first cardinal rule of skincare: You slept with your makeup on!
Don’t beat yourself up over it, but be honest: how many times have you finally gotten into bed and realized you haven’t taken off your foundation? Or you still have mascara on?
“Ohhhh it’s no big deal, it’s already been on all night, I can always clean up in the morning!”
Did you know that your skin ages 17 days for every night that you leave your makeup on?
Knowing that, would you still be able to fall asleep with makeup on?
Makeup in general can impede the natural exfoliation process your body undergoes. So your skin cells take longer and longer to replace themselves. The lack of natural exfoliation delays the growth of new cells, which gives the skin an aged and dull appearance.
As we talked about in a previous post, the life cycle of a skin cell is approximately between 40 and 56 days, so this process allows for a natural turnover of skin cells and keeps our protective “shield” as strong as possible!
The most important steps of this process happen while we are asleep.
If the skin cannot breathe at night, it cannot stay healthy!
Murat Evin, Creative Director at The London School of Make-Up, also discourages sleeping with makeup on.
“Not removing makeup before you go to bed means that it cakes onto your face,”
“As wonderful as makeup is, if it is not properly removed before bed, it can lead to a collagen breakdown. If collagen cannot be produced properly, it means your skin ages faster than it is supposed to; drying out, it creates more wrinkles and helps to deepen existing ones.”
Makeup is already known to clog our pores and lead to breakouts, so you should never wear it longer than you have to!
