Over the past year, sunscreen has dominated headlines. A bombshell study done by the FDA was published in the Journal of American Medical Association and found the beginnings of something troubling. The findings demonstrated that when certain sunscreens were applied based on the maximal recommended use, key active ingredients were actually absorbed through the skin and into the body.
But…is it all sunscreen?
This finding may sound scary at surface-level understanding, but let’s dive in a little deeper. Today we are going to be taking a look at an aspect of cosmetics that has confounded buyers since the dawn of commercialism: ingredients.
Chemical vs. Mineral Filters
There are two main categories of sunscreen that are classified based on the function of their ingredients.
Mineral sunscreen ingredients rest on the surface of the skin and work to create a barrier that reflects harmful UV rays away from the user.
Chemical sunscreen ingredients work in an entirely unconventional manner. These chemicals are actually absorbed and sit within the top layers of your skin to soak-up UV rays before they can cause any damage.
The Problem of Chemical Absorption
Any time a substance is absorbed into the skin, there is a possibility that it can reach the bloodstream. This is especially true when it comes to chemical filters in sunscreen. The FDA found all six active ingredients that were tested reached the bloodstream after a single use.
The following ingredients were found to enter the bloodstream and should be avoided (barring new research findings):
- avobenzone
- oxybenzone
- octocrylene
- homosalate
- octisalate
- octinoxate
The FDA even found that many of these sunscreen ingredients absorbed so efficiently that they were detected in breast milk and urine samples. Researchers from Haereticus Environmental Laboratory published a study that may indicate a link between the amount of exposure to the ingredient oxybenzone and birth defects during the first trimester of pregnancy (specifically the gastrointestinal ailment known as Hirschsprung’s disease)
At the end of the day these are foreign substances that do not belong in our bodies!
